Special to the Democrat-Gazette/Jim Bodenhamer The Wilson's Mountain Home house has been awarded a Green Building Standard certification from the National Association of homebuilders.

The two essay contests, the Patriot's Pen and the Voice of Democracy, are sponsored annually by Fulton's VFW Post 2657 and the Men's and Ladies' Auxiliaries.

The Patriot's Pen essay contest is for students grade 6-8, and their subject matter reflected on why they appreciate our veterans. The Voice of Democracy essay contest, for high school students, asked students to reflect on why veterans are important to our nation's history and future.

Students had much to say on the topics, each one original in their thoughts. They referred to the bravery, courage and strength shown by those who have served. They spoke of keeping America free.

William Privia-Fryreas from St. Peters Catholic School said that he is proud to have family members who have served in the military, and he spoke of a culture that praises comic book superheros, when veterans are the true heroes of our country.

"My social studies teacher (Chris Gray) is really engaging during history class," said South Callaway senior Haley Call, who won second place in the Voice of Democracy contest. "He paints such a picture, factoring in wars and how our country was created, that he inspired me to write the essay."
