Totta becomes Lady Hornets' scoring leader

Senior guard rallies Fulton past Boonville in OT

Sloane Totta had a surplus of memorable moments.

The senior guard became Fulton's all-time leading scorer with an extraordinary 31-point effort and triggered a late rally to carry the Lady Hornets to a 67-60 overtime NCMC victory over Boonville on Monday night at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.

Totta was 14 points shy of the scoring mark - owned by her head coach, TJ Quick - coming into the contest. Totta established herself as the new leader when she knocked down one of her seven 3-pointers midway through the second quarter.

Officials tried to stop the game to quickly recognize Totta's milestone, but Boonville had already inbounded the ball. On Fulton's next trip down the court, Totta buried a 3 from almost the same spot as the previous one and play was briefly interrupted to honor her.

"To coach my alma mater and have my record broken by one of my own players, it was just a great night," Quick - a 2005 Fulton graduate - said Tuesday night. "I haven't been coaching for very long, but this will go down as one of the top moments in my career.

"People don't fully understand what it takes to get to this level. Sloane is a competitor and wants to get better all the time. As a former athlete, I can remember the grind, working hard and putting in the hours."

Totta, who has signed to play at NCAA Division II Truman State University, still had plenty to do Monday night.

The Lady Hornets - who won at Boonville 56-47 on Dec. 16 - were down to the Lady Pirates 35-27 at halftime and trailed 43-40 to start the fourth quarter. Boonville then led 57-55 late in the game when Fulton was forced to foul.

The Lady Pirates made the first free throw but missed the second. Senior forward NaShayla Brandt pulled down the rebound for the Lady Hornets and made a swift pass downcourt to Totta, who coolly lofted in a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to tie the game at 58-all and force overtime.

"She's been doing this for a long time," Quick said. "When we need a big-time shot, we're looking for Sloane. She came up big - there's nobody else we'd rather have to take that shot."

Totta's job, though, wasn't done. She tallied the first five points of the extra period as Fulton outscored Boonville 9-2 to complete its comeback.

"I couldn't have written the script any better," Quick said. "It was a perfect way it went down - (for Totta) to break the record, to get a conference win and to start the new year."

The Lady Hornets (8-1, 4-1 North Central Missouri Conference) also received important contributions from other players. Junior guard Dionne Vaughn responded with a career-high 13 points and Brandt delivered a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Rachel Guse' also had eight rebounds.

"We had some key players step up," Quick said. "Sloane would be the first one to tell you it was a total team effort."

Paige Renfrow countered with 17 points to steer three players in double figures for Boonville. Brynn Edwards followed with 15 points and Abbie Lemmons finished with 10.

Fulton (0-5) dropped the junior varsity contest 42-23. Freshman guard Mattie Arnold scored a team-high nine points and sophomore center Alize Coleman contributed eight.

The Lady Hornets - drawing the third seed - face No. 6 Fatima at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the first round of the California Tournament.
