Between 50 and 75 vehicles were damaged in a cover fire Friday.

The fire, which was believed to have started from an unsupervised brush fire, spread its way across vehicles at Algiere Salvage on Old U.S. 40.

Lana Karhoff, the chief of the North Callaway Fire Protection District, said that the NCFPD received a page at approximately 2:50 p.m. for the cover fire, but was not aware at the time that vehicles were involved. Approximately 30 volunteer firefighters from NCFPD, Boone County Fire Protection District, Central Callaway Fire Protection District and Millersburg Fire Department responded to the call.

Karhoff said that now is not a good time for scheduled brush fires due to dry grass and winds, which can cause "controlled" fires to spread quickly.

"This is a lot of fire to put out at one time," she added.

There are no injuries reported at this time and as of 5 p.m. firefighters were still putting out vehicles.
