Thunderbirds suffer first-ever loss to MMA

MEXICO - The North Callaway Thunderbirds suffered their first loss in school history to the Missouri Military Academy Colonels 44-42 when Bayern Oldckbayer scored the game-winner on a conventional three-point play with 4.8 seconds left Wednesday night.

North Callaway was up 42-41 with :11 to play, but then Oldckbayer scored in the lane and was fouled. He hit the free throw to give MMA a two-point edge.

The Thunderbirds hurriedly pushed the ball down the floor and sophomore guard Coy Danison was fouled with :00.2 remaining, but couldn't force overtime when he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity.

Danison finished with a game-high 20 points for North Callaway (2-15), which was just 8-of-16 from the foul line.

Oldckbayer led the Colonels (2-14) with 19 points and Robert Shields contributed 12.

Sophomore guard Justin Popp and freshman guard Andrew Locastro scored 11 points apiece as the Thunderbirds (9-4) won the junior varsity game 48-32.

North Callaway hosts Eastern Missouri Conference opponent Elsberry at 6 p.m. Friday.
