No. 2 Fulton wrestlers finish second at Odessa Invitational

ODESSA - Seniors Josh McClure and Zach Benner won their respective weight classes at 145 and 220 pounds as the state-ranked Fulton Hornets wrestling team took second place at the Odessa Invitational on Saturday.

Fulton - ranked second in Class 2 by missouriwrestling.com - compiled 154 points. The Hornets were competing without senior Trenton Clines at 152 pounds, junior Brandon Dews at 120 and senior Melanie Holsman at 106.

Smithville, sitting behind Fulton at No. 3 in Class 2, rolled to the Odessa team championship with 196 points. The Warriors had wrestlers in all 14 weight classes.

Posting second-place finishes for Fulton were seniors Clayton Bristol (285 pounds) and Kobe Kaminski (195), junior Luke Berrey (170) and sophomore Colton Bristol (182). Senior Andy Baysinger (160 pounds), junior Devan Hudson (126) and sophomore Tucker Caswell (113) added third-place finishes.

McClure and Benner both went 5-0 to lock up their titles. McClure (33-1) scored a 4-0 decision over Smithville's Brian Boyd in the championship at 145 pounds, while Benner (35-0) pinned Centralia's Sam Hasekamp in 2 minutes, 24 seconds for first place at 220.

Clayton Bristol (29-2) was edged by Smithville's Jacob Bohlken 4-2 in the title match at 285 pounds. Kaminski (13-5) was forced to bow out of the championship at 195 pounds against Smithville's Jacob Boyd because of a medical forfeit.

Berrey (30-5) lost a 19-6 major decision to Mexico's Brit Wilson for first place at 170 pounds. Colton Bristol (23-9) dropped a 14-4 major decision to Mexico's Jaylen Lee in the championship at 182 pounds.

Baysinger (30-4) took third place at 160 pounds by pinning Richmond's Kenton Delana in 2:35, while Hudson (26-8) outlasted Excelsior Springs' Darrion McLaughlin 9-7 in the third-place match at 126. Caswell (31-3) picked up third place at 113 pounds with an 8-0 major decision over Centralia's Andrew Newbrough.

Fulton can wrap up its second straight North Central Missouri Conference title when it closes out the regular season at Marshall at 6 tonight. The Hornets are 22-1 overall and 5-0 in the NCMC.
