Bulldogs bolt to fifth-place win at Sturgeon

STURGEON - Sophomore guard Kaden Helsel's game-high 22 points powered the No. 6 seed South Callaway Bulldogs over the No. 8 Community R-6 Trojans 73-52 in the fifth-place game of the 32nd-annual Sturgeon Tournament on Saturday.

South Callaway (5-13) led 16-10 after the first quarter and went into halftime ahead 28-17. The Bulldogs outscored Community 23-17 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 51-34.

"We shot the ball well all three games and defended well throughout the tournament," South Callaway head coach Tony Brandt said. "We hope to build on that momentum heading into the last month of the season."

Sophomore guard Dylan Lepper tallied 17 points for the Bulldogs and freshman guard Peyton Leeper contributed nine.

Gage Graves paced the Trojans with 16 points and Gatlin Curtis added 11.

South Callaway plays at Russellville in a Show-Me Conference game at 6 tonight.
