Westminster sweeps Blackburn (Ill.) in softball doubleheader

The Westminster Lady Blue Jays improved to 18-15 overall and 11-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after sweeping the Lady Beavers, 13-6 and 8-0, in Tuesday night’s home doubleheader.

Junior first baseman Erica Burney’s grand slam highlighted a five-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth inning in the second game for Westminster College, which clinched the win on the mercy rule after five innings. Burney set a school single-season record and equalled a career mark with her 10th home run.

Sophomore left fielder Amber Tepen smacked a two-run homer in the opener, going 2-for-3 with four runs batted in to power the Lady Blue Jays’ 16-hit rampage. Tepen also hit a two-run shot in the nightcap and finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored as Westminster rolled up 13 hits.

Burney went 2-for-4 in the second game, while freshman right fielder Caty Barrett was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and a run scored. Junior third baseman Anne Baker finished 2-for-3, scored three times and had a steal.

Senior starter Shannon Perrigo (9-6) scattered five hits to log the shutout win for the Lady Blue Jays. Perrigo struck out three and walked none.

Junior starter Alyson Hahn helped herself in the first game by finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Burney also went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Baker was 2-for-3 with two RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

Hahn (9-6) went the distance to pick up the victory, surrendering six runs — five earned — on 11 hits. She struck out three and walked two.

Westminster ends the regular season with a SLIAC hom doubleheader against Principia (Illinois) College at 5 p.m. today.
