T-Birds wrap up EMO win over Wellsville

AUXVASSE, Mo. — The North Callaway Thunderbirds finished off a suspended game with Wellsville by handing the Tigers their first Eastern Missouri Conference loss 11-5 on Wednesday night.

North Callaway led 11-3 with one out in the top of the fifth inning when the contest was stopped because of heavy rain, hail and lightning on April 7. The Thunderbirds are now 7-11 on the season and evened their EMO record at 4-4, while Wellsville dropped to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Junior catcher Wyatt Branson was 3-for-4 with a run batted in and two runs scored as North Callaway accumulated 15 hits. Junior shortstop J.T. Higgins finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and scored twice, while sophomore starter Coy Danison went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Sophomore center fielder Adam Reno was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and junior right fielder Tyler Barton finished 1-for-4 with a triple and scored once.

Danison (1-0) threw a complete game to post the victory, giving up five runs — four earned — on six hits. He struck out seven and walked four.

The Thunderbirds (7-5-3) bowed in the junior varsity game 8-1.

North Callaway travels to Silex — ranked fifth in Class 1 — for an EMO matchup at 5 p.m. today. The Thunderbirds then return home for a non-conference game against Sturgeon at 5 p.m. Friday.
