Historic preservation panel discusses status of certification

After members of Fulton’s Historic Preservation Commission heard reasons for maintaining status as a Certified Local Government, they decided continuing the designation was a good idea.

Gayla Dunn, the city’s community development officer, told members of the commission that maintaining the city’s CLG status has benefits.

“First of all, it puts you in a position of power because you get to write your own rules,” Dunn said. “You get to say, for instance, if the current rules are too loose.”

The status also helps those with CFG status get funding for things like technical assistance training and planning.

“The training gives you something to draw from to help make educated decisions,” she said.

The city of Fulton earned the designation about two years ago. Commissioner Judy Schaneman said she supported the city keeping the CLG active.

“I see we have a lot to gain with this and little to lose,” she said.

Commissioners also talked about the city’s outdated historic preservation plan, which dates back to 1993. Members will ask the City Council to discuss updating that plan. The commission will next meet at 3 p.m. May 17.
