The more items members of the VFW Post 2657 have to auction on May 7, the merrier the auction will be.
“We’re trying to raise $2,000 to $3,000 for the Super Sam Foundation,†said Larry Underwood, Post commander.
So far, a small selection of donated items has collected in a back room of the post, at 505 Collier Lane. There’s a 30/30 Marlin rifle, a shotgun and a couple of bar stools. A few barbecue grills and a wooden dollhouse also will be part of the auction.
Custom cabinetmaker Ron Elliott furnished a cornhole game, also among the silent auction items.
“We donated that,†he said. “We just did it for our community.â€
But plenty more items are needed, Underwood said.
“We’ll also take financial donations,†he added. “All of it goes to Super Sam.â€
The Super Sam Foundation, which had a 5K run last Saturday, was started by Cassie and Matt Santhuff in memory of their son, Sam, who died 11/2 years ago. The foundation raises money for kids fighting any life-altering illness, Santhuff said last weekend, and it will fund its first $50,000 pediatric cancer research grant this year. The foundation also has provided more than 1,100 comfort packs to children locally and across the country.
Along with the May 7 silent auction, VFW members will have a pork steak dinner. The event will run 1-5 p.m. with the silent auction about 3 p.m.
