Prep Baseball: New Bloomfield 2, Tuscumbia 1

NEW BLOOMFIELD, Mo. — Senior shortstop Clay Jensen scored the winning run on junior second baseman Zach Burton’s two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Wildcats to the Show-Me Conference win Thursday night.

Tuscumbia scored its only run in the top of the second to take a brief lead, but New Bloomfield (11-6, 3-1 SMC) quickly tied the game with a run in its half of the inning. The game remained deadlocked until Burton delivered his decisive hit for the Wildcats in the sixth.

Burton went 2-for-3 and scored a run as New Bloomfield ended up with six hits. Senior third baseman Tyler Fennewald and junior left fielder Robert Manning were each 1-for-2, while senior starter Grant Nichols and senior catcher Derek Shikles both finished 1-for-3.

Nichols gave up the one earned run on only four hits in going the distance for the victory. He struck out eight and issued three walks.

The Wildcats play a makeup game at Fulton at 5 p.m. today.
