North Callaway girls take sixth at Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY CITY, Mo. — Sophomore Reyna Schmauch won the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes, 42.33 seconds to direct the Ladybirds to a sixth-place finish at the Montgomery County Invitational on Tuesday.

Freshman Samantha Haas was victorious in the triple jump (32 feet, 2 1/2 inches) and sophomore Kassi O’Dowd triumphed in the 3,200 (13:04.79) as New Bloomfield finished in a tie for eighth place. Junior Elizabeth Harrison took fourth in the long jump (15-1 3/4) as Missouri School for the Deaf tied for 13th place with seven points.

In the boys’ division, sophomore Payton Culwell came in second in the 400 (:53.37) to pace New Bloomfield to a sixth-place finish. Junior Levi Gilman was third in the 110 hurdles (:16.04) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (:43.84) as North Callaway finished 10th. MSD tied for 14th place with four points.

Senior Erinn Bush also took second in the shot put (33-6 3/4) and third in the discus (96-4) as the North Callaway girls accumulated 52 points. Senior Bethany Bloss came in behind Bush in third place in the shot (32-9 1/2), while the Ladybirds’ 1,600 relay of Schmauch, sophomore Kyla Bertschinger and juniors Jaclyn McMurtry and Colleen Meffert finished third in 4:32.68.

O’Dowd also placed third in the 1,600 (5:56.79) and junior Kate Baxter came in fourth in the 100 hurdles (:17.16) as the New Bloomfield girls totalled 39 points.

Payton Culwell teamed with freshman Bailey Crane, junior Zain Culwell and sophomore Clay Walker in taking second in both the 800 relay (1:37.10) and 1,600 relay (3:42.56) for New Bloomfield. Senior Charlie Schattgen finished third in the 3,200 (11:00.32) and Crane came in fourth in the 400 (:54.46) as the Wildcats collected 50 points.

Senior Manzell Payne placed fourth in the triple jump (39-1/2) as the North Callaway boys compiled 33 points.

Palmyra locked up the boys’ team title with 150 points and host Montgomery County captured the girls’ team championship with 115.

North Callaway and New Bloomfield both compete at California at 3:30 p.m. next Tuesday. MSD will compete at the Vienna Black and Gold Invitational at 3 p.m. today.
