MSD team wins second at national culinary bowl

The Missouri School for the Deaf (MSD) culinary team recently placed second overall in the Seventh Annual Deaf Culinary Bowl, hosted by the California School for the Deaf campus in Riverside, California. MSD has competed in the Culinary Bowl twice in two years.

The Culinary Bowl provides professional development and career skills training for students, as well as networking opportunities and specialty culinary workshops.

Similar to the reality television show Iron Chef, the Deaf Culinary Bowl is a competition for high school students from across America who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The competition is team-based; six students prepare a three-course meal in just under two hours.

The menu for this year’s competition was based on French-Pacific Northwest cuisine and featured each team’s take on the following dishes: an appetizer featuring a corn fritter, an entré using salmon, and a dessert incorporating lemon.

It also included All-Star competition categories in knife skills and the Deaf Challenge. The competition took place March 19.
