Bulldogs defeat Harrisburg to earn 12th straight victory

MOKANE, Mo. — The South Callaway Bulldogs demolished the Harrisburg Bulldogs 18-2 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

South Callaway (13-1) — who beat Dixon 2-0 earlier in the day — picked up its 12th straight victory after defeating Harrisburg.

South Callaway — ranked No. 10 in Class 3 — took an early lead after scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. South Callaway tallied three in the top of the second but Harrisburg came up with two in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 7-2. South Callaway produced four runs in the third and seven in the fourth.

Freshman shortstop Peyton Leeper went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two triples, three runs batted in and four runs scored as South Callaway collected 14 hits. Sophomore center fielder Kaden Helsel was 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and three runs scored, while junior second baseman Graysan Peneston went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore starter Landon Horstman (3-0) picked up the win for South Callaway. In four innings, Horstman allowed two unearned runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked two.

The Bulldogs made the most of a meager offensive attack by managing just two hits in the victory over Dixon. Senior catcher Cameron Richardson was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, while Horstman — playing third base — also went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Richardson doubled to center with two outs in the second and scored when Horstman followed with a double to right. Richardson reached on an error to start South Callaway’s fifth, advanced to second when Horstman was safe on an error and came around to score on a double play.

Peneston (3-0) — the starter in the opener — threw a four-hit shutout to secure the complete-game win for the Bulldogs. Peneston struck out three and issued two walks.

South Callaway travels to Hermann for a non-conference matchup with the Bearcats at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
