Helsel, Bulldogs come in second at Show-Me meet

WESTPHALIA, Mo. — South Callaway sophomore Kaden Helsel took second place in the 100 meters and came in third in both the 200 and long jump as the Bulldogs finished second as a team at the Show-Me Conference championships Tuesday night.

New Bloomfield senior Charlie Schattgen won the 3,200 and the quartet of freshman Bailey Crane, sophomore Payton Culwell, junior Zain Culwell and sophomore Clay Walker was victorious in the 800 and 1,600 relays as the Wildcats placed third behind South Callaway.

In the girls’ division, sophomore Adrian Mann prevailed in the 300 hurdles and took second in the 200 to lead South Callaway to a fifth-place finish. Freshman Samantha Haas placed second in both the triple jump and long jump, and was third in the 200 as New Bloomfield came in sixth.

Helsel finished second in the 100 with a time of 12.03 seconds and finished third in the 200 in :25.05, while placing third in the long jump at 19 feet, 7 inches, as the South Callaway boys compiled 120 points. Helsel also teamed with freshman Peyton Leeper, junior Andrew Buckner and sophomore Dalton Stone to win the 400 relay in :47.42.

Senior Brandon Ward took second (5-10) and sophomore Austin Meyer followed in third (5-8) in the high jump for the Bulldogs. Freshman Wyatt Hager placed third in the 110 hurdles (:20.04), sophomore Landon Horstman came in third in the triple jump (40-3), and senior Hunter Schroer finished third in the shot put (39-2).

Sophomore Clayton Knipfel also took fourth in the 110 hurdles (:20.61) and junior Harley Kight finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (:46.48). South Callaway’s 800 relay of Kight, Buckner, Meyer and Ward placed third in 1:40.78, while the 1,600 relay of Meyer, Kight, Horstman and Ward came in third in 3:50.84.

Schattgen triumphed in the 3,200 in 10:48.51 as the New Bloomfield boys accumulated 94 points. Crane, Payton Culwell, Zain Culwell and Walker won the 800 and 1,600 relays with respective times of 1:37.58 and 3:37.37.

Zain Culwell also took second in the 200 (:24.63), while Walker was third in the 100 (:12.09) and Payton Culwell finished third in the 400 (:53.63). The Wildcats’ 400 relay of Crane, Payton Culwell, junior Bradley Roddy and Walker came in second in :47.49, while the 1,600 relay of senior Christian Eickhorst, sophomore Kyle Emerson, freshman Robert Morningstar and Schattgen placed fourth in 9:35.45.

Mann was victorious in the 300 hurdles (:50.40) and came in second in the 200 (:28.91) as the South Callaway girls collected 87 points. Mann also partnered up with sophomores Ashley Potter and Kaci Jordan, and junior Haley Walters to win the 400 relay in :54.72.

Jordan triumphed in the triple jump (32-9 1/2), while Potter produced a third-place finish in the 100 (:14.18) and took fourth in the high jump (4-4). The 800 relay of Potter, Jordan, junior Josie Mealy and Mann came in third in 1:57.43.

Haas took second in the triple jump and long jump with respective leaps of 31-7 and 13-10, and was third in the 200 with a time of :29.15 as the New Bloomfield girls totalled 53 points. Junior Baylee Garrett came in third in the high jump (4-8) and sophomore Kassi O’Dowd finished fourth in the 3,200 (13:41.03).

Russellville captured the SMC boys’ championship with 149.5 points and host Fatima wrapped up the girls’ title with 142.

New Bloomfield competes at the Southern Boone Relays at 2 p.m. Friday. South Callaway competes at the Capital City Invitational in Jefferson City at 11 a.m. Saturday.
