Aldermen sworn in

Holts Summit's mayor and board of alderman members took their oaths of office Monday night at the board meeting.

Landon Oxley was sworn in for another two-year term as mayor.

Those aldermen returning for two-year terms included Ward 1 Alderman Sharon Schlueter and Ward 2 Alderman Thomas Durham.

Also sworn in was Ward 2 Alderman Charles Chamberlin, who will serve a one-year term.

All four were elected in last Tuesday's municipal elections.

After the ceremony, the board approved ordinances to appoint Kent Brown as city attorney, Renee Godbee as city prosecutor, Curtis Hanrahan as municipal judge and Cotton Walker as alternate municipal judge.

In other business the board:

• Heard an update on the progress for a wastewater improvement project in the community. This can be traced back to a 2011 $7 million dollar bond issue approved by voters.

Over the last few years, the city has formed a partnership to have Jefferson City take care of it's sewer treatment needs, resulting in lowering some costs and allowing Holts Summit to do more wastewater improvements inside the community.

At Monday's meeting, a timeline was presented by All State Consultants showing that through the end of the year they'll be doing easement acquisition, condemnation and acquisition when needed, approving design plans and be ready to award a bid for construction of the project in January or February of next year. Construction would start in June 2017 with construction done by September 2018.

• Approved having the police department move forward with the process to purchase an additional cruiser for the force. The department has been working with only two fully equipped cruisers to patrol the city.

• Approved having city staff get requests for proposals for a consulting firm to put together a comprehensive plan for the city. It would give a framework for land use, helpful in light of the potential for commercial development.

It was reported only few months ago the city had approximately 30,000 square feet of commercial property. But much of that space has been filled and is now down to only 7,000 square feet available.
