Lady Hornets trip Kirksville in 5-3 victory

Fulton freshman third baseman Makenzie Johnson collected three hits and drove in three runs to direct the Lady Hornets softball team to a 5-3 NCMC victory over Kirksville on Tuesday night at the high school athletic complex.

The win was Fulton's first over Kirksville in head coach Laura Dooley-Wilder's eight seasons as head coach. The Lady Hornets (5-11, 3-5 North Central Missouri Conference) tallied two runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 2-all, then went in front to stay with two runs in the second and adding their final run in the fourth.

"I'm very proud of how the girls played," Dooley-Wilder said. "We did a great job with runners in scoring position."

Johnson went 3-for-4 as Fulton totalled seven hits. Freshman center fielder Grace Sparks also finished 2-for-4 and scored twice, while sophomore starter Kendalyn Roesner was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore second baseman Emma Abbott went 1-for-3 and scored a run.

Roesner picked up the complete-game win, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out five and issued five walks.

The Lady Hornets travel to Hannibal for an NCMC matchup at 5 p.m. today.
