McIntire Elementary School has been awarded a $4,000 literacy grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The funds will be used to purchase what are known as Hi Interest/Low Level reading books, which are writ- ten specifically for readers whose abilities are lower than their age appropriate interests.
The elementary school also participates in the Dollar General "Reading is Fundamental" program. Three times per year students receive a free book to take home with them.
According to a spokesperson from Dollar General, McIntire was chosen for the award because of its history of "successfully building literacy." In a press release from the foundation, Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos stated, "We are committed to making a difference in people's lives through the support of literacy initiatives and educational programs in the communities we call home."
