Hickman trips Ladybirds softball team behind big inning

COLUMBIA - The Hickman Lady Kewpies broke a 1-all tie with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning Saturday to spark their 8-2 victory over the North Callaway Ladybirds softball team.

Senior second baseman Karlie Popp's RBI fielder's choice in the top of the first put North Callaway (9-3) in front, but Hickman answered with a run in its half of the first to pull even and then took control in the second. The Lady Kewpies (9-7) tacked on their other two runs in the fourth.

Junior Taylor Wilson - who started on the mound and later moved to first - had an RBI single in the seventh for the Ladybirds, who have lost three of their last five after starting the season 7-0. Wilson (5-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs - only two earned - on six hits in 1 2/3 innings, striking out one and issuing a walk.

Wilson went 1-for-3 and freshman first baseman-shortstop Mackenzie Ausfahl finished 1-for-3 with a run scored as North Callaway was limited to six hits.

The Ladybirds (10-0-1) triumphed in the junior varsity game 8-4.

North Callaway hosts Fulton at 5 p.m. today.
