White, Blue Jays roll to first win of season

Sophomore QB responsible for three scores, Westminster defense registers nine sacks

Sophomore quarterback Trent White threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score Saturday as the Westminster College Blue Jays collected their first win of the season, tripping Iowa Wesleyan University 27-6 in their home and UMAC opener at Priest Field.

Westminster's defense held Iowa Wesleyan to 199 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers while tormenting Tigers quarterback Caleb Huss, sacking him nine times. Iowa Wesleyan's lone score came on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Huss to Jeremy Gomez with 38 seconds left in the first half.

The Blue Jays (1-1) opened the scoring on senior kicker Kevin Ludwig's 22-yard field goal at the 7:07 mark of the first quarter. White then made it 10-0 when he scampered 7 yards for a score with 3:24 to play in the half.

Westminster took a 10-6 lead into the break and extended its advantage on White's 16-yard touchdown pass to sophomore running back Latif Adams with 7:33 remaining in the third quarter. The Blue Jays increased their lead to 17-6 when White connected with junior wide receiver Mike Washington for a 10-yard score with 9:24 to go in the game.

Ludwig then sealed Westminster's victory when he hit a 37-yard field goal with 3:02 left.

White was 29-of-41 passing for 284 yards, with no interceptions, as the Blue Jays broke out for 407 yards of total offense and had just one turnover. White also gained 48 yards on nine carries.

Adams rushed for a game-high 50 yards in seven attempts as Westminster finished with 123 yards on the ground. Washington led the team with seven catches for 81 yards, while freshman wide receiver Teddy Deas had six grabs for 57 yards. Junior wide receiver Jack Williams also contributed three catches for 62 yards.

Huss completed 10-of-19 passes for just 94 yards. Larry Jackson ran for a team-high 41 yards on nine carries as Iowa Wesleyan (0-2, 0-1) was limited to 105 yards on the ground.

The Blue Jays remain at home for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference matchup against MacMurray (Ill.) College at 1 p.m. Saturday. MacMurray opened its season with a 22-10 UMAC loss to St. Scholastica on Saturday in Duluth, Minn.
