Owls soccer team ends in tie with Park in AMC opener

PARKVILLE - Sophomore forward Julian Wells' goal in the 67th minute allowed the William Woods University Owls soccer team to play to a 1-1 tie with the Park University Pirates in Saturday's American Midwest Conference opener.

Park University (2-0-2) took a 1-0 lead on Cyril Gadu's goal in the 19th minute. The Pirates protected that advantage until William Woods University (2-2-1) pulled even when Wells scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Matheus Schmid. The two teams then battled through two scoreless overtimes to end up in the stalemate.

"We played extremely tough today," Owls head coach Nathan Mason said. "To go on the road and get a point for the AMC is an amazing result.

"We came back from being down 1-0 and had our chances to go ahead as well. I couldn't be happier with the team defending and togetherness that was showed today."

William Woods was outshot by a 21-10 margin, including 6-3 in shots on goal. Neither team had a corner kick.

Sophomore goalkeeper Conor Cable came up with five saves for the Owls.

William Woods plays at AMC rival Columbia College at 7 p.m. Thursday.
