Blue Jays soccer team blanks Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Junior forward Drew Cook scored a goal and had an assist, while junior goalkeeper Raul Belman recorded his first shutout of the season in the Westminster College Blue Jays soccer team's 4-0 win over Illinois College on Sunday night.

Cook assisted on freshman midfielder Cooper Smith's goal in the 74th minute to make it 3-0. Cooper then closed out Westminster College's scoring with an unassisted goal in the 78th minute.

Senior midfielder Kevin Knobbe logged the Blue Jays' first goal in the 42nd minute, off an assist from senior forward Drake Trease. Junior midfielder Tripp Sheehan followed with an unassisted goal in the 51st minute.

Belman needed just one save to earn the victory in net as Westminster (2-1) outshot Illinois College (2-1) by a decisive 21-6 margin. The Blue Jays finished with 10 shots on goal and a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Westminster began its Illinois trip with a 4-1 triumph over Lakeland College (0-2) on Saturday in Jacksonville. Trease (4th minute), sophomore midfielder Daniel Barone (26th), sophomore back Austin Chandler (41st), and sophomore midfielder Mason VonderHaar (70th) accounted for the Blue Jays' goals.

Belman allowed a goal in the 76th minute and posted three saves to collect the victory.

Westminster outshot Lakeland 17-7, including 9-4 in shots on goal. The Blue Jays also owned a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

Westminster plays its home opener against the University of the Ozarks (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Friday. The match will be played at Fulton High School.
