Lady Owls soccer team plays to tie with Avila

Senior midfielder Jordan McNamara's goal in the 31st minute allowed the William Woods University Lady Owls soccer team to play to a 1-1, double-overtime tie with the Avila University Lady Eagles on Thursday night at Firley Field.

Avila scored in the 23rd minute on Caroline Hayes' goal, but William Woods pulled even when McNamara scored off an assist from freshman defender Shelby Scanlan. Both the Lady Owls and Lady Eagles are now 0-2-1 on the season.

"It was certainly end-to-end action all night long," William Woods head coach Randy Hall said. "With the heat like it is, to survive without injuries isn't a terrible thing.

"Obviously we are a little disappointed with the result, and despite being able to trade punches, we just wished better for ourselves."

Avila edged William Woods in overall shots (24-17), shots on goal (11-7), and corner kicks (5-4). Lady Owls senior goalkeeper Ashley Parisi finished with 10 saves.

"For me, (freshman defender) Kailyn Graham was the player of the game tonight," Hall said. "Parisi came up with three big saves in the first half as well, and if we can get Jordan (McNamara) catching her stride and work a rotation with some other players on the wing and take advantage of the space we are finding available, I think we find plenty of success throughout the year."

William Woods remains at home for a non-conference matchup against Central Methodist University at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
