Owls soccer team earns first win of season

Junior midfielder Anthony Moscatello scored the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute, helping send the William Woods University Owls soccer team to its first win of the season in Wednesday night's home opener, 4-2 over Avila (Kan.) University at Firley Field.

William Woods University (1-1) sealed the victory in the 85th minute on sophomore forward Rodrigo Alves' goal, off an assist from junior midfielder Brett Hodges.

The Owls raced out to a quick lead when senior defender Alex Severino scored on sophomore midfielder Lendell Louis-Jacque's assist in the 4th minute. William Woods then made it 2-0 on Hodges' goal - assisted by Severino - in the 49th minute.

Avila (0-3), though, answered with goals just a minute apart from Louis Gallagher and Brandon Brewster in the 63rd and 64th minutes, respectively, to tie the match.

Moscatello then put the Owls in front to stay when he scored on an assist from sophomore defender Jesse Bowers.

William Woods was outshot by a slim 18-17 margin, but owned a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. The Eagles had an 8-6 advantage on corner kicks.

Owls sophomore goalkeeper Conor Cable and junior backup Bridger Pretz posted three saves apiece.

William Woods plays at Ottawa (Kan.) University at 6 p.m. Saturday.
