Lady Owls volleyball team goes 3-1 at Oklahoma tournament

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - The William Woods University Lady Owls volleyball team swept Langston University (25-16, 27-25, 25-15) and Manhattan Christian University (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) on Saturday to finish 3-1 at the Oklahoma Wesleyan Tournament.

Sophomore setter Brittney Engelbrecht delivered her first career double-double in the triumph over Langston, tallying a career-high 12 kills and 18 assists. Senior outside hitter Emily Becker and junior middle blocker Stephanie Davis contributed six kills apiece.

Senior middle blocker Cierra Merz powered William Woods with a career-high 13 kills in the victory over Manhattan Christian. Senior outside hitter Lauren Rodewald added 11 kills, Becker chipped in with nine and Davis had seven.

Engelbrecht added 38 assists and junior defensive specialist Shelby Hinshaw came up with a game-high 22 digs.

The Lady Owls opened their season by splitting two tournament matches Friday. William Woods started off with a 25-14, 25-20 and 25-14 sweep of Bacone (Okla.) College, but then fell to Sterling (Kan.) College in a 21-25, 25-21, 26-24 loss.

Becker topped the Lady Owls with nine kills against Bacone, while Davis contributed eight. Engelbrecht also provided 27 assists and Hinshaw had 15 digs.

In the loss to Sterling, Becker produced her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 12 digs. Davis followed with nine kills and Rodewald and senior right-side hitter Rachel Frabotta logged seven apiece.

Hinshaw and freshman defensive specialist Melanie Kala combined for 31 digs.

William Woods is off until it begins play in the Bellevue (Neb.) University Tournament with a match against host Bellevue at 11 a.m. Friday.
