Lady Hornets volleyball team puts up valiant fight in District 13 title loss

BOONVILLE - The Fulton Lady Hornets volleyball team didn't go quietly.

No. 2 seed Fulton took the first game 26-24, but top-seeded Boonville rallied to win the final two games by identical 25-18 scores to capture the Class 3, District 13 championship Tuesday night.

The Lady Hornets - who also pulled off a dramatic 26-24, 9-25 and 26-24 triumph over No. 3 seed Southern Boone in the semifinals - ended the season with a 13-16-2 record.

"It was a truly exciting, grueling and rollercoaster of both emotions and play kind of night," Fulton head coach Megan Youse said. "I'm proud of the players for fighting and working so hard in the match against Boonville.

"Boonville was the favorite, by quite a lot, and to nearly pull an upset was a thrilling way for us to finish the season. Each player - freshman through senior, bench through starter - had a hand in our successful second-place finish. As a coach, you can't ask for more than the relentless effort I saw."

Sophomore outside hitter Kate Pani and senior middle hitter Hannah Cerda were both first-team picks on the all-District 13 squad. Senior outside hitter Maddie Dreste and senior libero Amanda Allison were second-team selections.

Pani was also an all-North Central Missouri Conference first-team choice, while Dreste and Cerda were second-team picks. The Lady Hornets took third place in the NCMC with a 6-4 mark.
