Lady Bulldogs softball team bows in District 10 championship

LINN - The No. 3 seed South Callaway Lady Bulldogs softball team managed just two hits in Friday night's 5-2 loss to the defending state champion and top-seeded Fatima Lady Comets for the Class 2, District 10 title.

Junior third baseman Konnor Arrowood was responsible for all of South Callaway's scoring with a two-run home run in the third inning. Senior first baseman Kennedy Farley singled in the first for the Lady Bulldogs' other hit.

Senior starter Ashley Miller went the distance in taking the loss for South Callaway, which completed its season with an 18-10 record. Miller allowed five runs - four earned - on six hits, struck out three and walked two.

The Lady Bulldogs reached the championship by toppling No. 2 seed Linn 8-3 in Thursday night's semifinals. South Callaway redeemed itself after falling at Linn 3-2 in a Show-Me Conference game Sept. 11.

The Lady Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning Thursday night, but the Lady Wildcats answered with two runs in their half of the inning to tie the game. South Callaway then took control by breaking out for three runs in the third and two in the fourth to open up a 7-2 lead.

Linn tacked on its other run in the fifth and the Lady Bulldogs scored their final run in the sixth.

Miller - playing third base - went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored as South Callaway piled up 13 hits. Junior catcher Alyssa Stambaugh also finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored once, while Farley was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored twice.

Senior left fielder Cheyenne Witt went 2-for-4.

Arrowood went the distance to earn the win, giving up three earned runs on eight hits. She struck out eight and walked three.
