Blue Jays flatten Fontbonne in SLIAC soccer semifinals

No. 1 seed Westminster will host No. 3 Webster for tournament title Friday night

The Westminster College Blue Jays soccer team put on another dominating display to move closer to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament championship.

Five different Westminster players provided goals and freshman goalkeeper Tanner Moesch needed just three saves to post a shutout as the top-seeded Blue Jays easily handled No. 4 Fontbonne University 5-0 in a SLIAC semifinal Wednesday night at Fulton High School.

Westminster (16-2) - which rolled to the SLIAC regular-season title with a 9-0 mark - will now host No. 3 seed Webster University for the postseason tournament championship Friday night. Match time has not been announced.

Webster toppled No. 2 seed Greenville (Ill.) College 4-2 in Wednesday night's other semifinal. The Blue Jays easily blanked Webster 7-0 on Oct. 13 in St. Louis.

Sophomore midfielder Daniel Barone started the scoring for Westminster on Wednesday night with an unassisted goal in the 24th minute. Senior midfielder Kyle Collins then made it 2-0 when he scored off an assist from Barone in the 41st minute.

Junior forward Drew Cook added to the Blue Jays' advantage with a goal in the 58th minute, coming on a shared assist from junior midfielders Peter Plakorus and Tripp Sheehan. Junior forward Josh Jaycox then extended Westminster's lead to 4-0 with an unassisted goal in the 71st minute.

Sophomore back Blake Hausman topped off the Blue Jays' convincing victory when he scored off a shared assist from Plakorus and freshman defender Patrick Bromstedt in the 87th minute.

Westminster easily outshot Fontbonne (9-11) by a 32-4 margin, including 19-3 in shots on goal. The Blue Jays also owned a decisive 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
