Hornets send three runners to state cross country meet

WARRENTON - The Fulton Hornets cross country team is sending a trio to the state meet.

Fulton sophomores Mason Gaines and Nathan Quick, and junior Tanner Steffen all qualified for state during the Class 3, District 4 championships Saturday.

Gaines came in fifth in 17 minutes, 30.30 seconds to guide the Hornets, who finished third as a team with 84 points. Steffen was right behind Gaines in sixth place in 17:37.61, while Quick took 13th in 17:49.99.

The Fulton threesome will run in the Class 3 boys' state championships at 11:25 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City. The top 15 runners and top two teams at district advanced to the state meet.

Also placing for the Hornets at the District 4 championships Saturday were junior Chaz Ballard (27th, 18:55.80) and freshman Brock Fisher (35th, 19:17.27).

Fulton sophomore Adrea Shadbolt just missed qualifying for state in the girls' division, placing 16th in 23:08.46. The Lady Hornets finished seventh as a team with 163 points.

Other Fulton place-finishers included senior Rachel Quick (25th, 23:39.32), junior Katie Lowry (37th, 24:35.30), sophomore Olivia Rice (41st, 24:51.75), and freshman Eryn Jones (46th, 25:06.33).
