Lady Bulldogs' 400 relay finishes third

After sailing to her second consecutive state title in the Class 2 girls' long jump, South Callaway senior Hannah Oberdiek played a role in helping the Lady Bulldogs earn their other medal.

Oberdiek was part of South Callaway's 400-meter relay - along with senior Sarah Jennings, freshman Adrian Mann and senior Alexis Wetherell - that took third in 51.25 seconds Saturday in the Class 2 state championships at Lincoln University's Dwight T. Reed Stadium.

Plattsburg prevailed in :50.80 to win the state title in the 400 relay.

Medalling for South Callaway in the boys' division Saturday were seniors Cory Hanger and Mason Shoemaker in the 400 and 100, respectively, as well as the 800, 400 and 1,600 relays.

The Bulldogs finished 11th overall with 20.5 points, while Skyline won the Class 2 boys' team title with 67. The Lady Bulldogs placed 16th as a team with 16 points, with Father Tolton taking the Class 2 girls' championship with 65.

Hanger came in fifth in the 400 in :51.41, with Skyline junior Madison Davis securing the state championship in :49.97. Shoemaker was seventh in the 100 in :11.35, while Kelly junior Maurice Davis collected the state title in :10.97.

Hanger and Shoemaker teamed with junior Ajay Cave and senior Dylan Hare to finish sixth in the 800 relay in 1:34.13. Bourbon claimed the state championship with a time of 1:30.80.

Cave, Hanger and Shoemaker joined with freshman Kaden Helsel to place seventh in the 400 relay in :44.87. Skyline took the state title in :43.99.

Hanger also combined with senior Terry Miles, junior Brandon Ward and freshman Austin Meyer to take seventh in the 1,600 relay in 3:37.79. Monroe City locked up the state championship in 3:28.29.

Mann just missed out on a medal in the girls' 800, coming in ninth in 2:28.37. Father Tolton junior Davis Atkins secured the state title in 2:21.13.

Jennings also tied for 12th place in the girls' high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches. Summit Christian Academy senior Carlie Queen, with a height of 5-6, triumphed for her second state championship in a row.

In the girls' triple jump, Jennings was 11th (33-1 3/4) and freshman Kaci Jordan followed in 16th (30-8 1/4). Crane junior Emma Lander used a leap of 37-11 1/4 to log her second consecutive state title.

Posting medal finishes Friday for the Bulldogs were sophomore Bennett Hager, fourth in the pole vault (13-0), and Miles - sixth in the 800 (2:02.01). Monroe City junior Chase Pennewell was the state champion in the pole vault at 15-6, while Monroe City senior Jonathan Shuck captured the state title in the 800 in 1:59.34.

Shoemaker was unable to qualify for the finals in the boys' 200 after coming in 11th overall with a time of :23.42 in Friday's preliminaries. Senior Kailey Brooks just missed making the finals in both the girls' 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, finishing ninth in both preliminaries with respective times of :17.41 and :51.11.

The Lady Bulldogs' 800 relay of freshman Ashley Potter, Mann, Wetherell and Oberdiek was not able to finish its preliminary Friday.
