Wildcats' Withers medals at Class 1 championships

Withers carded a 10-over-par 82, finishing with a two-round total of 166 to finish in a three-way tie for 10th place at the Class 1 boys' state golf championships on Tuesday at Meadow Lake Golf Course.

Withers - tied for 15th after 18 holes - trimmed two shots off his opening-round score to finish among the event's top-15 golfers and earn a state medal on his home course.

"It's one of those things where he's struggled in some of those tournaments we've had at the home course," Wildcats head coach Aaron Murphy said. "It was playing tough, it was wet and the rough was tall, but I'm proud of him for how he stuck it out."

Withers' finish is the best for a New Bloomfield golfer since the second of Haden Crumpton's consecutive Class 1 runner-up showings in 2006.

Murphy, like Withers, tied for 10th place as a Wildcat golfer in 2004.

"It's a great honor and the second-best thing to playing," Murphy said of the share distinction. "You feel like you're passing along knowledge and it's very rewarding."

Barat Academy's Sean Weber (76-74-150) overtook first-round leader Logan Smith of La Plata High to win the state individual title.

LaPlata (337-346-683) captured the team title.
