No. 3 Owls tied for lead after first round of NAIA Championships

The third-ranked William Woods men's golf team is sitting pretty and has a share of first place after the first round of the NAIA golf championships on Tuesday at the LPGA International Hills Course.

The Owls and the College of Coastal Georgia each opened with a 6-under-par 282 and share a five-shot advantage over Wayland Baptist (Texas) University.

William Woods sophomore Matt Wells fired off a 6-under 66 and finds himself a shot off the individual lead. Coastal Georgia's Alastair Tibcombe paced the field with a 7-under 65.

Senior Julian Taylor posted a 1-under 71, knotted with seven others for 13th place. Sophomore David Houlding logged an even-par 72 to grab a share of 21st with three others.

Senior Stan Gautier shot 1-over to tie with 10 others for 25, while sophomore Billy McKenzie (5-over 77) is in a 16-way tie for 84th place.

Second-round play begins this morning.
