Late push helps Fulton get past South Callaway

Sophomore second baseman Josh Quick singled in a pair of runs, part of a three-run sixth inning for the Hornets in their 5-3, non-conference victory over the Bulldogs on Monday.

The game was moved to South Callaway due to wet field conditions at Fulton.

Tied 2-2 entering the top of the sixth, Bulldogs sophomore starter Graysan Peneston retired Fulton junior right fielder Trenton Clines on a line out to center, then got sophomore first baseman Jared Peery to ground out to third base.

Hornets sophomore starter Luke Gray singled to left, while junior left fielder Zach Franklin followed up with his own single. Sophomore center fielder Alec Fleetwood drew a walk to load the bases, then Quick lined a single to center on a full count to score Gray and Franklin to push Fulton ahead by two.

Fleetwood scored on an error at the plate later in the frame to provide the Hornets' final run.

"I think a lot of that comes down to focus, it comes down to discipline and getting something good to his," Hornets head coach Darren Masek said. "I think tonight we were in the zone in terms of not swinging at bad pitches and as a result we hit the ball pretty well."

Senior third baseman Tyler Adams singled in South Callaway's final run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Tristan Steffens worked the final three innings in relief to pick up the win for Fulton (10-13).

Steffens struck out four, allowed three hits and an earned run. From the plate, he finished 3-for-4 with a double to spark Fulton's 12-hit attack. Fleetwood was 2-for-2 with a double, Gray was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Quick went 2-for-4.

Senior reliever Terry Miles was the losing pitcher for the Bulldogs, walking two and allowing two hits in 1 1/3 innings. Senior center fielder Cory Hanger went 3-for-3 and Adams was 2-for-3 as the Bulldogs collected seven hits.

South Callaway turned around right around and rolled past St. Elizabeth 10-0 in five innings to earn a share of the Show-Me Conference title.

The Bulldogs (15-7, 5-1 SMC) scored twice in the bottom of the first, aded two runs in both the second and third, then ended the contest with four in the fifth.

Adams was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored to lead South Callaway's 10-hit outing. Senior shortstop Dax Helsel was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and a run scored, while senior right fielder Mason Shoemaker finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double.

Freshman starter Kaden Helsel struck out three in a complete-game, four hitter. Helsel yielded two walks in picking up the win.

"The kids kept their intensity level up and went out and did what they needed to do and got a share of the conference title," Bulldogs head coach Heath Lepper said. "That was one of the goals the boys had at the beginning of the season and they met their goal."

Fulton will play Fatima - ranked No. 1 in Class 3 by the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association poll - for third-place in its own tournament at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

South Callaway hosts Bourbon in its regular-season finale at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
