Bulldogs win team title, Lady Bulldogs claime second at District 3 track meet

A trio of individual wins and just as many relay victories catapulted the South Callaway Bulldogs to a second straight district track crown.

The Bulldogs racked up 136 points in capturing the boys' team title at the Class 2, District 3 championships on Saturday at Linn High School. South Callaway totaled 136 points to hold runner-up Russellville (116).

The Lady Bulldogs (131 points) claimed second place, falling short of claiming a second consecutive district title of their own. Father Tolton Regional Catholic (157) held on to win the girls' team championship.

The New Bloomfield boys finished with 43.5 points to place seventh, while the Lady Wildcats accumulated 15 to take 11th.

The top-four finishers in each event advance to this Saturday's Class 2 sectional beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Jefferson City High School.

Senior Mason Shoemaker accounted for two of the Bulldogs' individual wins, prevailing in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Shoemaker triumphed in the 100 with a time of 11.63 seconds, while running the 200 in a winning time of :23.58.

Senior Terry Miles won a district title in the 800, besting the field in 2:07.98.

South Callaway's 400 relay quartet of Shoemaker, senior Cory Hanger, junior Ajay Cave and freshman Kaden Helsel won the event with a final run of :46.81.

The Bulldogs also prevailed in the 800 relay as the team of Cave, Helsel, senior Dylan Hare and junior Brandon Ward posted a winning time of 1:40.99

Junior Connor Stupperich joined Hanger, Miles and Ward on South Callaway's 1,600 relay, which clocked a first-place time of 3:43.56.

Hanger ran a :52.13 to place second in the 400. Shoemaker finished second in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 3 1/4 inches. Miles was the runner up in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-8.

Hanger (38-8) and Ward (5-6) took third in the triple and high jump, respectively. Sophomore Bennett Hager finished third in the pole vault at a height of 12 even.

Lady Bulldog senior Sarah Jennings took home district titles in both the high jump (5-0) and the triple jump (33-3 1/2). South Callaway senior Hannah Oberdiek - the defending Class 2 long jump champion - secured a district title in the event with a leap of 16-9.

Senior Alexis Wetherell and freshman Adrian Mann teamed with Jennings and Oberdiek to run a first-place time of :52.66 in the girls' 400 relay.

Lady Bulldog freshman Kaci Jordan posted a leap of 31-4 1/4 to earn second in the triple jump. South Callaway senior Kailey Brooks clocked a :17.85 in the 100 hurdles and a :52.09 in the 300 to claim second in both events.

Brooks, Wetherell, Mann and freshman Ashley Potter were second in the 800 relay in a time of 1:55.59.

Oberdiek clocked a third-place time of :27.68 in the 200, while Mann (2:36.26) and Jennings (15-3) posted respective third-place showings in the 800 and long jump. Freshman Elizabeth Luebbert placed third in the 3,200 in a time of 13:47.89.

Oberdiek (:13.57) took fourth in the 100, while South Callaway freshman Greta Cross was fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 6:25.05.

Wildcats junior Leo Ramirez placed second in the boys' shot put with a toss of 38-1. Junior Charlie Schattgen (11:20.12) was third in the 3,200, while sophomore Zain Culwell took third in the long jump with a hop of 18-3.

Schattgen, junior Christian Eickhorst and freshmen Payton Culwell and Kyle Emerson finished third in the 3,200 relay with a result of 9:11.61.

New Bloomfield sophomore Baylee Garrett was third in the girls' high jump, clearing the bar at 4-6. Lady Wildcat freshman Kassi O'Dowd took fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 13:59.98.
