South Callaway boys take third place at Viburnum

VIBURNUM - Sophomore Bennett Hager logged the South Callaway Bulldogs' only victory in the pole vault to pace them to a third-place finish at the Viburnum Mac Attack Invitational on Tuesday.

In the girls' division, senior Alexis Wetherell was victorious in the triple jump, sophomore Jordan Killion prevailed in the javelin and the 3,200-meter relay logged a first-place finish as South Callaway came in fourth overall.

Hager won the pole vault with a height of 13 feet as the Bulldogs compiled 102 points. Bourbon locked up the team championship with 177 points and Viburnum was second with 108.

Freshman Austin Meyer also took second in the high jump (5-6) and third in the 400 (:57.55), while freshman Kaden Helsel placed second in the long jump (17-5) and third in the 100 (:12.37).

Senior Jacob Smith came in second in the javelin (121-4) and fifth in the shot put (35-9), while freshman Austin Clubb finished second in the 3,200 (12:26.99) and sixth in the 1,600 (5:51.78). Freshman Landon Horstman took third in the triple jump (35-3).

Senior Caleb Sconce placed fourth in the 110 hurdles (:20.01) and came in fifth in both the 300 hurdles (:49.01) and triple jump (33-10). Freshman Nick Rodriguez finished fourth in the 3,200 (14:16.58), freshman Hunter Schroer was fifth in the discus (93-2), and freshman Clayton Knipfel placed sixth in the javelin (73-2).

The Bulldogs' 400 relay of junior Ajay Cave, Helsel, freshman Dalton Stone and Horstman took second in :48.61, while the 800 relay of Cave, Helsel, Horstman and Hager placed third in 1:42.01. The 3,200 relay of Meyer, Clubb, freshman Jared Stieferman and Rodriguez came in fourth in 10:15.55.

The 1,600 relay of Smith, Sconce, sophomore Harley Kight and Hager also finished fourth in 4:11.90.

Wetherell took the top spot in the girls' triple jump with a distance of 30-7 1/2 as the Lady Bulldogs generated 82 points. Steelville secured the team title with 135 points, Cuba came in a close second with 129 and Licking finished third with 116.

Wetherell also came in third in the 400 (1:07.15) and was fourth in both the 100 (:14.46) and 200 (:29.34). Killion triumphed in the javelin with a heave of 64-4, placed fourth in the shot put (26-9), and was sixth in the discus (63-4).

Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs' 3,200 relay of junior Haley Pate, sophomore Kallie Guthrie, junior Amy Worley and freshman Greta Cross won in 12:11.17.

Freshman Elizabeth Luebbert placed second in the 3,200 (14:59.65) and freshman Kaci Jordan took third in the triple jump (28-9 1/2). Freshman Ellie Dunnavant finished fourth in the discus (73-9), while Cross came in fourth in the 1,600 (6:25.59).

Guthrie placed fifth in the 800 (2:56.21) and freshman Ashley Potter was sixth in the 100 (:14.81). The 1,600 relay of Pate, Worley, Guthrie and Potter took third in 4:55.12.

South Callaway competes in the Class 2, District 3 championships Saturday in Linn.
