No. 3 William Woods men surge to AMC golf title

The third-ranked William Woods University Owls, directed by individual champion Billy McKenzie, easily wrapped up the American Midwest Conference men's golf title by 25 strokes at the Dalhousie Course on Tuesday.

William Woods finished with a 22-over par 886 team total (296-297-293) to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NAIA national championships May 19-22 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Missouri Baptist University followed the Owls in second place with a 911, while Lindenwood University-Belleville (Illinois) was third (918). Freed-Hardeman (Tennessee) University came in fourth and Columbia College took fifth.

McKenzie, a sophomore, captured the individual title with a 5-over 221 (70-78-73). Fellow sophomore Matt Wells was next in second place with a 223 (77-74-72), while senior Julian Taylor (79-72-74) and sophomore David Houlding (72-73-80) shared fourth place with a pair of 225s.

Senior Stan Gautier finished in a tie for 12th with a 233 (77-82-74) to complete William Woods' scoring.

Houlding was named the AMC player of the year and newcomer of the year. He was joined on the all-AMC team by McKenzie, Wells, Taylor, Gautier and freshman Alasdair McDougall.

McDougall also was selected the conference's freshman of the year and the Owls' Barry Doty was named AMC coach of the year.
