Lady Owls capture fourth consecutive AMC title

The William Woods Lady Owls racked up a staggering 282 points in cruising to a fourth straight American Midwest Conference title last Saturday.

Park University (179) was the runner up, followed by Missouri Baptist (78), Hannibal-LaGrange (77) and St. Louis College of Pharmacy (38).

The Owls accumulated 194 points, falling five points short of completing a championship sweep for the school. Lindenwood-Belleville (198) held on for the team title, Park (159) finished third, Hannibal-LaGrange (56) placed fourth, while Columbia College and St. Louis College of Pharmacy each notched 38 points to tie for fifth.

Freshman Grace Young became the William Woods women's fourth national qualifier after triumphing in the 1,500-meter run. Young hit the NAIA "B' standard with a finishing time of 4 minutes, 40.51 seconds, while winning the 800 in 2:22.86.

Freshman Alliah McClendon and redshirt senior Madeline Emme - each national qualifiers in the 100 hurdles - both hit the NAIA "A' standard in finishing 1-2 in the race. McClendon won the event in :14.66, while Emme earned second in :14.79.

The Lady Owls claimed the top-two spots in the 10,000 via senior Lee Anna Sanders and junior Samantha Brolaski. Sanders - who will compete in the marathon at the NAIA championships - won the 10,000 in 42:13.01, while Brolaski (42:52.6) was the runner up.

Freshman Stephanie Clawson was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.02. Sophomore Sarah McRae (1:16.06) and freshman Jenn Strosnider (1:21.82) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

Freshman Megan Wilson (1:00.4) earned second in the 400. Freshman Loren Brooks (1:02.13) placed fourth, while junior Petra Bethea collected fifth in 1:02.86.

Wilson was fourth in the 200 with a time of :26.84. Prokup ran a personal-best of :12.68 to take third in the 100, while McClendon (:12.96) was fifth.

Junior Dominica Prokup earned third in the 100 hurdles with a time of :15.99, while Freshman Hannah Rutherford (2:28.19) placed third in the 800. Sanders picked up third in the 5,000 with a time of 19:31.49.

Brooks, Emme and freshmen Emily Andrews and Jessica McIlhenny won the 400 relay in a time of :51.64. The foursome of Bethea, Brooks, Clawson and Rutherford (4:20.1) triumphed in the 1,600 relay.

Bethea teamed with redshirt senior Alex Apperson, junior Abby Baker and freshman Jami Brandow to take the 3,200 relay in 10:24.09.

Bethea won the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 1/4 inch. Emme (4-11) used a personal-best distance to garner second, while Brooks placed fourth in 4-7.

Emme triumphed in the long jump with leap of 16-1/4, while taking second in the triple jump at 32-3 1/2 as she was later named the Field Athlete of the Meet. Bethea (15-2) finished fourth in the long jump.

Lady Owls occupied four of the top-five slots in the discus, headlined by freshman Rachel Baker's winning throw of 116-11. Freshman Erin Neuner (112-8) was the runner up, while freshman Madelyn Scrivner (106-5) and sophomore Kelsey Scherder (94-1) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Scrivner hit a personal mark of 146-1 to win the hammer throw. Barker claimed second in 125 even, while Neuner was third with a throw of 33.57 meters. Scherder placed fourth in the javelin with a toss of 28.84.

Scrivner earned third in the shot put with a throw of 38-7 on her way to Freshman Athlete of the Meet recognition. Head coach Daniel Radkowiec was named AMC Coach of the Year for his work with William Woods.

Junior Rhett Cook won the 200 (:21.97) and the 400 (:48.33) - both personal bests - en route to being named the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet.

Junior Gabriel Dos Santos prevailed in the 100 with personal-best finish of :10.92. He placed third in the 200 (:22.31), while senior Nick Zink was fifth in :22.64. Zink clocked a :48.7 in the 400 to place second.

Junior Kaleb Wilson ran a 15:43.52 to win the 5,000. Freshman Daniel Lantz took second in the 110 hurdles with a time of :16.62, while junior Martell Washington was third in :16.91.

Lantz earned third in the 400 hurdles with a clip of :58.76. Senior Reid Schmit earned third in the 10,000 with a time of 35:52.8.

The team of Cook, Zink, Lantz and freshman Denver Horn won the 1,600 relay in 3:21.38.

Junior Tyler Jones, sophomore Timothy Ward, freshmen Kyle Gabrielson and Phillip Kulpinski placed third in the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:19.06.

Junior Adam Smith set a personal best in the discus, using a toss of 141 even to win the event. He placed fourth in the shot put (41 2 1/4) in being named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet.

Senior Alonzo Smith was fourth in the shot put (42.34 meters), while freshmen Darrien Dickey (155-11) and Joseph Mueller (128-8) were second and fifth, respectively, in the javelin.

Dickey was second in the long jump with a distance of 20-10 and hit 41-8 3/4 in the triple jump, good for fifth place. Sophomore Preston Wolfe and freshman Damion Tipler each cleared 5-10 3/4 in the high jump to earn third and fourth place, respectively.

William Woods has its final tune-up meet before nationals when it competes at the Sam Williams Twilight this Saturday in Emporia, Kansas.
