North Callaway stumbles to Silex in EMO play

The Thunderbirds were jolted by the Owls' five-run outbursts in the fourth and fifth innings of Thursday night's 17-6 Eastern Missouri Conference loss.

Silex (5-7, 3-5 EMO) broke out for three runs in the first and four more in the second, before North Callaway finally put up two runs in its half of the second. The Thunderbirds (7-10, 4-6) logged their other four runs in the fifth, with the contest ending on the 10-run rule.

Sophomore shortstop J.T. Higgins finished 2-for-2 with a run batted in and a run scored as North Callaway recorded seven hits. Senior right fielder Zach McCowan was also 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored once.

Freshman Coy Danison - making his first start of the season - surrendered seven runs, five earned, on five hits in just two innings to take the loss for the Thunderbirds. Danison (0-1) struck out three and walked three.

"That was Coy's first time on the mound at the varsity level this season, and we put three freshmen out there (Thursday night)," North Callaway head coach Kevin O'Neal said. "Silex put the ball in play, those balls found holes and they scored runs."

The Thunderbirds (8-5) won the junior varsity game 13-6.

North Callaway travels to Sturgeon for a non-conference matchup at 5 p.m. today.
