Nichols fans 10 as New Bloomfield tops MMA

Junior pitcher Grant Nichols struck out 10 in making his first varsity start of the season as the Wildcats outlasted the Colonels 8-6 in Thursday night's non-conference victory.

Nichols gave up six runs - five earned - on seven hits and walked three in six innings to pick up the win.

"Grant was on all night," New Bloomfield head coach Justin Forsythe said. "His curveball was working really well, he got ahead (in the count) and he stayed ahead."

The Wildcats (8-7) - who are 8-1 in their last nine games - plated their first two runs in the top of the second inning and made it 3-0 with a run in the third. Missouri Military Academy countered with two runs in its half of the third, but New Bloomfield piled on five runs in the fourth to stretch its lead to 8-2.

The Wildcats then had to withstand a four-run rally by the Colonels in the sixth to hold on for the win.

Senior second baseman Sam Niedergerke went 3-for-4 with a double, a run batted in and scored twice as New Bloomfield amassed 18 hits. Senior catcher Derek Shikles and senior left fielder Brady Wiler were both 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Senior first baseman Boyd Kempker was 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored once, while senior shortstop-reliever Clay Jensen finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Nichols helped himself by going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and senior center fielder Tucker Lane went 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.

The Wildcats return to Show-Me Conference play when they host Russellville at 5 p.m. Monday.
