Westminster drops 3-of-4 to Cornell, SLIAC foe Eureka

The Lady Blue Jays dropped both ends of a non-conference road doubleheader to the Cornell (Iowa) College Rams on Sunday.

Westminster (4-11) bowed 10-2 in five innings in the second game. The Lady Blue Jays grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Cornell tacked on two in the bottom of the frame to grab the lead for good.

Westminster freshman catcher Amber Tepen went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sophomore left fielder Alyssa Johnson was 2-for-2 with two RBIs as the Lady Blue Jays were outhit 15-6.

Freshman Katherine Cooper was roughed up for nine earned runs on 13 hits to take the loss. Cooper walked two and didn't record a strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.

Westminster managed just three hits in a 19-0 five-inning romp in the opener.

Sophomore shortstop Brittany Hodge was 1-for-2 with a double, while sophomore first baseman Alyson Hahn and sophomore third baseman Anne Baker each went 1-for-2.

Tepen took the loss in the opener, yielding 14 earned runs on 12 hits in 2 1/3 innings. Tepen struck out one batter, but walked five as the Rams racked up 18 hits.

The Eureka Red Devils did all their scoring in the first two innings in blanking Westminster 5-0 in the backhalf of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Saucier Field.

Sophomore second baseman Kelsi Hill paced the Lady Blue Jays with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Hahn, Baker and Tepen each went 1-for-3 as Eureka held an 8-5 hitting edge.

Tepen took the loss on the hill, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits in 1 1/3 innings. Hahn tossed the remaining 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing an unearned run on four hits.

Hahn pitched a four-hit shutout to vault Westminster to a 6-0 win over Eureka in the opener. Hahn struck out five and walked two in picking up the victory.

Johnson singled in a run in the bottom of the first, while sophomore center fielder Bree Peterson's solo homer in the third gave the Lady Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.

Westminster (3-1 SLIAC) finished with an 8-4 hitting advantage.

Hill was 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and two steals, while freshman first baseman Kim Morrison was 2-for-2 with a homer, a double and two RBIs. Johnson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a steal, while Baker, Hodge and Peterson all were 1-for-3.

The Lady Blue Jays host Illinois College in a non-conference doubleheader today. Games begin at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively.
