Owls' offense erupts in AMC series sweep of Harris-Stowe

William Woods exploded for a two-game total of 29 hits to sweep an American Midwest Conference doubleheader from the Hornets on Sunday at at Backer Sports Complex.

The Owls (20-6, 8-3 AMC) - winners of five straight - scored 15 runs on 14 hits to win the finale 15-6.

Owls senior center fielder Cody Stewart finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a double, a stolen base and three runs scored to pace four Owls with multiple hits. Senior third baseman Austin Clapp went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while senior right fielder Nick Spagnola was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a double and a run scored.

Senior shortstop Stephen Kohler was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Senior first baseman Dustin Kremer was 1-for-2 with five RBIs, a homer and three runs scored, while sophomore catcher Dakota Smith went 1-for-5 with two RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Schmidt threw 2 2/3 innings to pick up the victory. He struck out four, allowed two earned runs on two hits and walked a batter.

William Woods never trailed in its 15-4 romp to open the twinbill. After the Hornets tied the game 4-all with two runs in the fourth, the Owls unleashed a decisive 10-run effort in the bottom of the fifth.

Sophomore second baseman Alex St. Pierre sparked William Woods, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Clapp finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a triple, three steals and two runs scored.

Junior first baseman Larry Price went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore designated hitter Konrad Kemper (South Callaway) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Spagnola was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored and Kremer was 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored.

Senior Adam Brush struck out four in four innings to get the win. Brush gave up four earned runs on six hits, while walking two.

Clapp finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to help William Woods hold on for the 3-2 win in Saturday's series opener. His two-out double in the third drove in Price and Stewart for the deciding runs.

St. Pierre went 2-for-3, while Price was 2-for-4 with an RBI to help the Owls outhit Harris-Stowe 9-6.

Junior pitcher John Cavness worked six innings to garner the win. He struck out two, walked one and allowed two earned runs on three hits.

Senior James Ball picked up the two-inning save, striking out three and giving up just one hit.

William Woods plays a non-conference doubleheader at Avila University today. Games begin at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively.
