Westminster trips Keuka to close Florida trip

The Blue Jays broke a 4-all tie with the Wolfpack by putting up three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to halt their three-game losing streak 8-4 on Friday.

Westminster College (8-4) - concluding its spring-break trip - prevailed despite being outhit 13-9. Keuka (N.Y.) College, which was plagued by three errors, slipped to 3-9 on the season.

Senior first baseman Tim Chambliss' two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh put the Blue Jays in front to stay. Westminster tacked on its other run in the inning when junior left fielder Deion Hughes reached on an error.

The Blue Jays added their final run in the eighth on freshman second baseman Blake Strebler's pinch-hit, RBI double with two outs.

The Wolfpack opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first, but Westminster took a 2-1 lead on sophomore right fielder Tanner Branneky's two-run home run in the second. Keuka answered with two runs in its half of the inning to go back on top, before the Blue Jays tallied a pair of runs in the sixth to claim a 4-3 advantage.

The Wolfpack then pulled even by manufacturing a run in their half of the sixth.

Chambliss finished 2-for-4 with two RBI to spark Westminster. Freshman Chris Asher - who started on the mound for the Blue Jays - also went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Branneky was 1-for-4.

Junior Collin Brinker, a North Callaway graduate, threw four innings in relief of Asher to log his first win of the season. Brinker (1-1) allowed just an earned run while scattering four hits, struck out four and issued a walk.

Westminster returns to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Spalding University at noon today in Louisville, Kentucky.
