Hughes sets school record as Westminster falls to RIT

Junior center fielder Deion Hughes set a school record with his seventh career triple as the Blue Jays were edged by the Tigers 7-6 on Wednesday.

Hughes surpassed the previous mark set by Cory Roper from 1999-2001.

Westminster (7-4) - which has lost three straight - led 2-0 in the sixth, but Rochester erupted for five runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a three-run advantage.

The Tigers extended their lead to 7-2 by adding two more runs in the seventh.

The Blue Jays responded with two runs in the eighth to trim the deficit back to three runs. Hughes tripled home freshman pinch-hitter Chris Asher, then scored on junior third baseman Tyler Branneky's RBI single to produce the final margin.

Sophomore Jake Plassmeyer took the loss for Westminster, allowing five runs - four earned - on three hits in just two-thirds of an inning. Plassmeyer had one strikeout.

Hughes finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the Blue Jays ended up with eight hits. Branneky was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Sophomore left fielder Tanner Branneky was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while junior right fielder Ryan Loethen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Westminster closes out its spring-break trip against Keuka at 10:30 this morning in Auburndale, Florida.
