Owls' defense breaks down in loss to Williams Baptist

The William Woods University Owls baseball team easily out-hit the Williams Baptist (Arkansas) College Eagles 9-3, but crippled themselves defensively by committing six errors in Friday night's 5-1 American Midwest Conference loss at Backer Sports Complex.

The loss stopped a two-game winning streak for William Woods University, which slipped to 15-6 overall and 3-3 in the AMC. Williams Baptist College improved to 7-10 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Owls answered with the tying run in their half of the inning on junior first baseman Jordan Dey's RBI single.

Unfortunately, that would be William Woods' final tally of the game. Williams Baptist countered right back by putting up four runs in the second to account for the final margin.

Dey finished 2-for-4 with a double to guide the Owls, while senior right fielder Nick Spagnola was 3-for-4 and senior center fielder Cody Stewart went 2-for-4.

William Woods junior starter Garrett Haslag lasted just 1 1/3 innings in being pinned with the loss. Haslag gave up only one hit, but allowed five runs - just two earned - and walked two.

Senior reliever James Ball finished up for the Owls by throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings. Ball scattered two hits, struck out eight and issued a walk.

William Woods and Williams Baptist wrapped up their three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday. Results were not available at press time.
