Lady Owls move win streak to six with Hannibal-LaGrange sweep

The William Woods University Lady Owls softball team stretched its season-high winning streak to six games with Friday's AMC doubleheader sweep of Hannibal-LaGrange University at Backer Sports Complex.

William Woods (11-10, 4-0 American Midwest Conference) rolled to an 8-0, five-inning victory in the opener, then triumphed 7-1 in the second game. The losses dropped Hannibal-LaGrange to 6-12 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

Senior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst went 3-for-3 with a triple, two doubles, three runs batted in and a run scored in the first game to ignite the Lady Owls' nine-hit attack. Scharnhorst delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning and added an RBI triple in the fourth.

Sophomore pinch-hitter Beth Begemann was 1-for-1 with a two-run double in the fourth for William Woods, while senior Julie Scheer also went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit, two-run single in the fifth. Senior second baseman Sam Parsons finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and sophomore center fielder Hannah Campbell was 1-for-1 with a triple and scored twice.

Freshman starter Allison Waskow tossed a three-hit shutout to log the complete-game win for the Lady Owls. Waskow struck out three and walked three.

Bre Logan - another William Woods freshman starter - followed up Waskow's outing by tossing a two-hitter and striking out 11 in going the distance for the victory in the nightcap. Logan walked just one and surrendered an earned run in the fifth.

Junior shortstop Shelby LeCuru went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in the second as the Lady Owls collected nine hits to duplicate their output in the opener. Begemann came through in a pinch-hitting role again, supplying a two-run double in the sixth in her only at-bat.

Redshirt sophomore right fielder Brailee Schulte finished 2-for-2 and had one of William Woods' five doubles, while also scoring a run. Junior left fielder Sydnae Hatton was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Scharnhorst went 1-for-3 with a double and scored once.

Senior third baseman Caroline Sicht finished 1-for-3, knocking in a run with the Lady Owls' other double in the third.

William Woods opens its spring-break trip to Florida with a doubleheader against Embry-Riddle University at 3 p.m. today in Daytona Beach.
