William Woods baseball team routs Lyon to avoid sweep

The Owls avoided the American Midwest Conference sweep with a decisive 14-3 win over the Scots on Monday at Owls Field.

William Woods (14-5, 3-2 AMC) totaled 13 hits in rebounding from a pair of losses to Lyon in Sunday's doubleheader.

The Owls scored 13 unanswered runs to begin the game, tallying four in the bottom of the first, two in the third and erupting for seven in the fourth.

The Scots (10-4, 2-1 AMC) notched two in their half of the fifth, then one more in the sixth, while William Woods topped off their scoring with a run in the seventh.

Senior center fielder Cody Stewart sparked the Owls with a 3-for-3, three-RBI showing. Stewart collected a double and a triple and scored a pair of runs.

Senior right fielder Nick Spagnola also went 3-for-3, driving in a run, scoring one and stealing a base. Junior first baseman Jordan Dey was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore designated hitter Konrad Kemper (South Callaway) finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Senior shortstop Stephen Kohler and sophomore second baseman Alex St. Pierre each had a hit and drove in a pair of runs.

Junior starter John Cavness struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Cavness allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and walked two batters.

William Woods outhit Lyon 12-9, but bowed 9-5 in Sunday's second game.

The Owls drew to within 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning, but the Scots pushed home a run in their halves of the fourth and fifth, then extended their lead with four runs in the sixth.

William Woods added four runs in the seventh to finish their scoring. Spagnola went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Dey and senior third baseman Austin Clapp each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Kemper was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and senior second baseman Javier Ledesma drove in two runs despite going hitless. Sophomore Ryan Schmidt threw three innings to take the loss. Schmidt gave up for runs (three earned) on four hits, striking out one and not yielding a walk.

The Owls were blanked 3-0 in Sunday's series opener. The Scots started their scoring with a run in the top of the second, then finished it with two in the fourth.

Junior left fielder Larry Price finished 3-for-3 with a double for William Woods. Dey and Kohler both went 1-for-3 as William Woods managed just five hits.

Owls senior starter Adam Brush was hampered by six walks in taking the loss. Brush struck out four in three innings and allowed three earned runs on two hits.

William Woods clashes with Culver-Stockton in non-conference play at 2 p.m. today.
