Westminster baseball team sweeps Eureka to start SLIAC play

Junior third baseman Tyler Branneky's three-hit day helped the Blue Jays topple the Red Devils 8-3 and complete a SLIAC series sweep on Sunday at Saucier Field.

Branneky was 3-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, a home run and a triple, tying the school record in that category for Westminster (5-1, 3-0 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

He connected on a double to lead off the bottom of the second inning then scored on an RBI single by freshman shortstop Chris Asher for the game's first run. Junior catcher A.C. Long supplied a two-run single, while freshman center fielder Nick Bohlmann's RBI base hit capped off the Blue Jays' four-run frame.

Branneky's two-out, solo homer in the third to extended Westminster's lead to 5-0.

Eureka (0-3, 0-3 SLIAC) responded with two runs in the fourth, but Westminster upped its advantage back to four runs with a sixth-inning tally.

Junior left fielder Deion Hughes' two-run homer in the seventh capped off the Blue Jays' scoring, while the Red Devils pushed home a run in the ninth to round out their offense.

Long went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Bohlmann was 1-for-2 and sophomore right fielder Tanner Branneky and senior second baseman Cam Backes were both 1-for-3.

Hughes finished 1-for-4 in Westminster's 12-hit attack.

Blue Jays senior Will Rule struck out five in eight innings to pick up the victory. Rule yielded a pair of earned runs on six hits and didn't surrender a walk.

Backes drove in five RBIs to help Westminster fend off Eureka 10-8 in the backhalf of Saturday's doubleheader. He 2-for-3 with a run scored as the Blue Jays totaled nine hits and fought through four fielding errors.

The Blue Jays broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with three runs, then stretched their lead to 7-0 with four more in the fifth.

The Red Devils drew to within 7-3 in the top of the seventh. Westminster added a run in the bottom of that inning, then concluded its scoring with two more in the eighth.

Eureka rallied for four runs in the ninth before the Blue Jays put the game away.

Junior Will Miller tossed seven innings to emerge victorious. Miller fanned six, walked one and allowed three unearned runs on four hits.

Senior first baseman Tim Chambliss was 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Westminster.

Hughes pitched a three-hit shutout to lift the Blue Jays to an 8-0 decision to open Saturday's twinbill. He fanned nine batters and walked just one, while going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored at the plate.

Chambliss finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two doubles and two runs scored. Tyler Branneky went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a triple, a double and a run scored, while Tanner Branneky was 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored.

Backes was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored as Westminster collected 11 hits.

Tyler Branneky garnered SLIAC Player of the Week recognition on the strength of a .615 batting average in four outings last week. He had three multi-hit games, drove in five runs and notched an on-base percentage of .706.

The Blue Jays hit the road for a SLIAC doubleheader at Blackburn (Illinois) College on Friday. Games will start at noon and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
