Prolific pitching pushes Lady Owls to AMC doubleheader sweep of Benedictine

Freshman Bre Logan's spotless outing capped off an unblemished day for the William Woods Lady Owls.

Logan struck out seven in five perfect innings as the Lady Owls stifled the Benedictine-Springfield Lady Bulldogs 8-0 in the backhalf of Monday's AMC doubleheader at Backer Sports Complex.

She needed just 64 pitches to pick up the victory for William Woods (9-10, 2-0 American Midwest Conference).

The Lady Owls notched the decisive run in the bottom of the first inning on senior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst's sacrifice fly to drive in sophomore center fielder Hannah Campbell.

William Woods padded its lead with seven runs in the fourth. Sophomore second baseman Alexi Cavins and junior shortstop Shelby LeCuru each had RBI singles, Campbell hit a two-run single and junior designated player Emily Murphy finished the Lady Owls' scoring with a three-run double.

Murphy went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Campbell, Cavins and LeCuru all were 1-for-2 with a run scored to account for William Woods' five hits.

The Lady Owls also won Monday's opener 8-0, coasting to the victory thanks to an 11-2 hitting advantage.

William Woods notched two runs in bottom of the first, added one in the second, four in the third and finished with one in the fourth.

Campbell was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. Junior left fielder Sydnae Hatton also went 2-for-2, driving in an RBI and scoring a run, while senior third baseman Caroline Sicht finished 2-for-3. Scharnhorst was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and LeCuru went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Freshman Allison Waskow tossed a two-hit shutout to get the win. Waskow fanned six and gave up a pair of walks.

The Lady Owls host an AMC doubleheader with Hannibal-LaGrange on Friday. Games begin at 1 and 3 p.m, respectively.
