Westminster baseball team drops series-finale to Nebraska Wesleyan

The Blue Jays surrendered five runs in the top of the ninth inning of an 11-8 loss to the Prairie Wolves on Monday at Hickman High School.

Westminster (2-1) led 7-3 after seven innings, but Nebraska Wesleyan plated three in the eighth to trim the deficit to a run. The Prairie Wolves pulled in front on back-to-back RBI singles in the ninth, then padded its lead on Colby McPike's three-run homer.

Freshman relief pitcher Chris Asher singled in the Blue Jays' final run in the bottom of the ninth.

Sophomore reliever Miller Bowles took the loss for Westminster, allowing four runs (three earned) in an inning of work. Bowles gave up three hits, walked none and didn't register a strikeout.

Senior second baseman Cam Backes went 2-for-3 with a double a run scored and a stolen base for the Blue Jays. Junior third baseman Tyler Branneky finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored as Westminster was outhit 11-10.

The Blue Jays earned the series win with a 15-2 seven-inning rout of Nebraska Wesleyan in the backhalf of Sunday's doubleheader.

Westminster led 6-2 before erupting for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Blue Jays racked up 15 hits, highlighted by three-hit outings by sophomore designated hitter Connor Hager and senior first baseman Tim Chambliss.

Hager finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored. Chambliss also went 3-for-4, collecting three doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.

Junior left fielder Deion Hughes was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore right fielder Tanner Branneky was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Junior Will Miller fanned four batters in five innings on the mound to get the win. Miller allowed two earned runs on six hits and surrendered a pair of walks.

Westminster notched seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to log a 9-3 come-from-behind win over the Prairie Wolves in Sunday's season opener.

Hughes scored the decisive run when junior right fielder Ryan Loethen drew a bases-loaded walk.

Chambliss finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walk, while junior catcher A.C. Long was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Hughes struck out five in six innings on the mound in the win. He gave up three earned runs on five hits, while walking two. The Blue Jays doubled up Nebraska Wesleyan in hits 12-6.

Westminster begins its home and St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader against Eureka on Saturday. Games will begin at 1 and 3:30 p.m., respectively, and the two teams will conclude the series at noon on Sunday.
