No. 19 Lady Owls bow to Briar Cliff

The No. 19 Lady Owls yielded six unanswered runs in bowing to the Lady Chargers 7-1 on Sunday at Backer Sports Complex.

The Owls (5-10) logged their only run of the game on senior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst's lineout to center field that plated sophomore center fielder Hannah Campbell in the bottom of the first inning.

Briar Cliff added a run in the second, another in the sixth and four in the seventh to finish their scoring.

Freshman Allison Waskow garnered the complete-game loss for William Woods. Waskow struck out six, but was saddled with four earned runs on six hits, while walking five.

Junior left fielder Sydnae Hatton went 1-for-2, while Campbell was 1-for-3. Junior third baseman Emily Murphy and senior designated hitter Caroline Sicht each went 1-for-3 with a double to round out the Lady Owls' four hits.

Sophomore right fielder Hillary Hentges' two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning lifted the Lady Owls to a 2-0 win over the Westminster Lady Blue Jays on Sunday.

Scharnhorst was 1-for-3 with a triple as William Woods managed just two hits.

Lady Owls senior Julie Scheer threw a five-hit shutout, striking out four and walking one.

Sophomore starter Alyson Hahn fanned seven in six innings for Westminster. Hahn allowed a pair of earned runs on two hits, but walked four.

Sophomore right fielder Bree Peterson sparked the Lady Blue Jays' offense with a 2-for-4 showing.

William Woods stopped a five-game losing streak by outlasting the Chargers 3-1 on Saturday in Kansas City.

The Lady Owls tallied two runs in the bottom of sixth to help Waskow garner the complete-game win. Waskow struck out seven, allowing an unearned run on five hits, while walking four.

Scharnhorst finished 2-for-3 with a two RBIs, a triple and a run scored. Hentges went 2-for-4 to push William Woods to a 6-5 hitting edge.

The Lady Owls tumbled to the Avila University Lady Eagles 6-2 to begin play on Saturday.

Hatton was 1-for-1 with a run scored, while Scharnhorst and Murphy each went 1-for-3. Senior catcher Macy Wierschem was 1-for-3 with a home run as William Woods was outhit 6-4.

Lady Owls freshman Bre Logan's nine walks plagued her in a complete-game loss. Logan struck out six, but allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits.

William Woods returns home for non-conference doubleheader against Culver-Stockton this afternoon. Games will start at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively.
